EVANGELION

by Tanninivver

Famous classic mecha anime Shinseiki Evangelion.

Essentially Evangelion came out in two bursts- the original series, and then a year or two later, a second project consisting of i) a recap movie, Death; ii) extended versions of episodes 21-24 of the series; and iii) a new movie, called End of Evangelion.

Everything not on this list is worthless and irrelevant. Except the famous manga by famous mangaka Sadamoto Yoshiyuki, but even that is better for the art than the story.

My advisories-

I would strongly recommend discarding any infamous memes or "knowledge" you've accrued beforehand. The English speaking fandom has spent nearly three decades accruing extreme, often fetishizing misreadings of characters. Ignore these and try to form your own readings.

Likewise, the religious elements are used in an SF context, but they are not devoid of meaning and an engagement with the religious elements is more subtle than is usually addressed. These elements are primarily from the famous Jewish Qabbalah, not the famous Christian religion- calling them the latter is a sure sign someone doesn't actually know what they're talking about. The famous quotes about them "being just to look cool" are taken out of context, where the implicit question wasn't "is this an SF work making creative use of mythology?" but "is this cult propaganda along the lines of famous cult Aum Shinrikyou?" There are also substantial elements taken from Shintou (famous Japanese paganism) mythology, and there is one being who resembles famous Germanic god Woden so strongly and in particular details that one has to doubt it's a coincidence.

  1. Neon Genesis Evangelion by Famous anime studio Gainax (Episodes 1-26)
  2. It starts out strong & melancholic in episodes 1-6, but there's a spat of sillier episodes in the second quarter (7-12 by the broadest reading) that might throw you off a bit; just keep going. The only one that's irredeemable is 10, Magmadiver. From 13 onward it returns to the original tone, with increasing ero-guro nature.

Episodes 21-24, as mentioned, exist in extended forms from the second project. These are usually if misleadingly called the "Director's Cuts" (DC) in English, and are denoted with a ' symbol- i.e. 21', 22', 23', 24'. If you're not sure if your release has those, check if the episodes are several minutes longer than the others or not. I would recommend just watching the DC versions. The on-air versions are

I recommend the famous 2D4U encode at this time, found wherever anime torrents are found. It contains both the on-air and DC versions of 21-24, although the "on-air" versions from anything but the original vhs/laserdisc releases still contain varying amounts inconsistent redraws and minor edits from the DC versions.

By all means, avoid the infamous netflix release, which contains major errors in the subs, some very dubious translations, and butchers the episode EDs.

  3. Evangelion: Death by Famous anime studio Gainax
  4. This is optional. Death is a famous recap movie, but it's very interesting in its nonlinear style, which juxtaposes & recontextualizes elements to bring about new insight. It used to be bundled with the famous first ~30 minutes of End of Evangelion (since they didn't complete the whole of End of Evangelion in time), famously designated (&) Rebirth, but no one watches it like that anymore.

There's almost no new material per se- although one scene has an important edit for understanding the famous First Impact.

That said, it might be best to save this for a second viewing.

The point is, I would recommend watching *something* before End of Evangelion as a palette cleanser / reset after episodes 25 & 26. This can be Death, it can be episodes 21'-24' again, or even just episode 24' again.

I recommend the famous Sephirothic release, found wherever anime torrents are found.

  5. End of Evangelion by Famous anime studio Gainax
  6. This is the famous second version of the finale, and the coup de grace. Internally, it's labeled as episodes 25' & 26'. However, this is not an extended version of episodes 25 & 26, but a completely new version of the same material. It expects you to have seen 25 & 26 for context to some of the character internalities and philosophical premises being discussed.

    Just watch it.

I recommend the famous Sephirothic release, found wherever anime torrents are found.

  7. The War & Winter of the Peacock Sabbath by Famous Ao3 user Aldinngautr
  8. "Far more interesting and original than most professionial speculative fiction coming out these days." - famous tumblr user nem0c

Famous ongoing fanfic by famous Ao3 user Aldinngautr that serves as a faithful sequel to the famous original Evangelion, formulated after over a decade of renowned scholarship. Set 293 years after the original, it tells the famous story of the famous War of the Peacock Sabbath, which took place during a famous winter. But all is not as it seems...

    Highly recommended.
